This year, ASID Ohio North and IIDA Cleveland/Akron teamed up to put on an awesome day for Interior Design students. The theme was “Passport to your Career” and the event was held at Ohio Desk.
The morning session allowed for groups of students to “travel” to different places to learn more about their potential career path. Each city or country was a destination to house one of our professional volunteer mentors, the students were given passports to have stamped at every destination. There were three professionals who spoke about their own career path, experiences and lessions learned, those professionals were: Therese Kish from New York Textiles and Interiors, Alie Warshaw from FMD Architects, and Sandy Varelmann from Weave Ideas.
The three professionals who gave portfolio reviews were Bridget Walsh from Process Creative Studios, Anna Baldi from HSB Architects + Engineers, and Halle Michalakes from DS Architecture.
Allison Powers from Vocon, spoke about the importance of the students professional online presence. Another Interior Design professional, Bonnie Cox from Herschman Architects, Inc., informed the students on the impact of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design). Thank you, thank you, thank you to Freelance photographer, Michelle Piglia, who was there doing professional head shots for the students.
The afternoon session was a walking tour of The 9, given by Brandon Kline and Christina Martini from Geis. This project is so current, many of our students had not seen any of the work done in this building. Brandon and Christina did a great job talking to the students about each phase of the project and some of the hurdles they had to overcome. The tour was very inspiring for our future designers!
We would like to take the time to thank all of our mentors who volunteered their time to make this event such a success! We hope this event gave students a real insight to the professional world!
