On September 23, 2017 at IIDA’s new international headquarters in Chicago, the 2017 Advocacy Symposium began. The weekend included a collection of panel discussions and activities with not only IIDA Advocacy coordinators across the country, but coalition leaders in several states, lobbyists, the excellent advocacy team at headquarters and of course, our CEO, Cheryl Durst. IIDA Ohio Kentucky chapter sent 6 participants including our Vice President of Advocacy, Cheri Tucker.
This two-day gathering of passionate individuals looking to take the Interior Design profession to the next level was both exhilarating and insightful. Headquarters was a buzz of excitement for what we can do in the next year to benefit our profession. The exchange of knowledge on what worked and did not work for chapters and coalitions across the country was beneficial to the entire group, especially individuals from states looking to make a big push for legislation in the near future. You can be sure everyone left that room on Sunday afternoon with the passion and fuel to hit the ground running when they returned home.
On top of the information received from the panels and conversations throughout the weekend, it was incredible to experience IIDA’s new office. This state of the art office that represents the forward progression of design in the workplace not only captures what true excellence in design means from a planning, finish and decorative perspective, but also offers breathtaking views of the city of Chicago.
All participants at the 2017 Advocacy Symposium received pins stating I Design. I Advocate. This reminds us of our duty as professionals to stand for what we believe in and what we think is deserved for our profession. Every day in state capitals around the country, lawmakers are making decisions on issues that affect Commercial Interior Design and how interior designers practice. As the voice for the industry, IIDA advocates for its members and the profession so interior designers may practice to thier fullest abilities. Our sites our set on the future and on the change we can make before gathering again in 2018! Help us with this fight and become an advocate today #IIDAadvocacy
