What is your favorite area of design? Throughout my education so far, we have only had the opportunity to briefly touch on the different areas of design, therefore I am not positive what area of design I like most. Though, I am leaning towards commercial retail and hospitality. One thing I have found a liking for, no matter the area of design, is the space planning process.
What was your favorite project in school? My favorite project so far as been my Carhartt Corporate Office Building.
The project goal was to select a corporate clothing company and develop a unique office space based off of the company’s brand and given program.
Why did you decide to get a degree in Interior Design?: When I was in high school I started to think about what I wanted to do with my future and at the time I had no idea. I went back to meet with my elementary school art teacher, who had also been an inspiration to me. She had a board in her classroom that showed career routes for artsy people, and this is when I started to consider Interior Design. I did some research and applied to Kent State. Once I began the program, I knew I had found the right career path.
What do you love about Interior Design?: My favorite thing about Interior Design is how much of an impact it can make. For example, in healthcare design it can help with the healing process and efficiency and in office spaces it can increase functionality and productivity. Another reason I love design is getting to work with people and getting to watch people's dreams come true. I had the opportunity to experience this first hand while working at The Cornice Company, a construction management firm. I helped to design The Corner Cup Coffee House in Stow, seeing this project from beginning sketches all the way through the construction process, This project gave me the chance to experience the owners thrill and excitement of watching her dreams come true.
What is your favorite thing about your IIDA Student Membership? My favorite thing about my IIDA Student Membership is getting to network. I haven't even had my membership a year and have already met more professionals than I could have imagined. I also enjoyed the design charrette and student mentor day.
