NeoCon from a Student’s Perspective

As an interior design student at Kent State University, Emily Beck, I am constantly looking for opportunities to explore the profession.  Having the opportunity to participate in the IIDA Student Design Charette in Chicago at NeoCon this year allowed me to do just that.

{ What is the IIDA Student Design Charette at NeoCon? And how do you get the opportunity?  "Schools nominated IIDA Student Members from around the country and competed live, onsite for an annual design competition that takes place during NeoCon. Students have less than six hours to develop a design solution, develop a presentation, and pitch their concept to a panel of esteemed judges." }

In groups, we worked to create design solutions for a space in The Merchandise Mart. After +/- 6 hours of designing, we presented our work to the jury.  Being able to work with other interior design students from across the country was a great experience.  Because of our different backgrounds and educations in design, we each contributed something different to the project which resulted in an Honorable Mention Award.

While at NeoCon, I was able to walk through the show and see the showrooms.  As a Senior Interior Design Student, a large amount of my studio projects have involved specifying furniture and materials.  Visiting the showrooms and seeing the new projects was great inspiration for future projects, as well as a good way to become familiar with the products within the industry.

I enjoyed my NeoCon experience and learned a lot from both the trade show and the design charette. I hope to go back to the trade show again next year!
