What is your favorite area of design? My absolute favorite part of Interior Design is that our industry is constantly changing. Because of this I love getting out there and seeing the new trends and ways of designing. I am really interested in broadening my knowledge of design by introducing myself to various styles. In this industry you never stop learning, you never stop seeing something new and that’s what I love about it.
Why did you decide to get a degree in Interior Design? After graduating from Furman University with my bachelor degree in Communication Studies I was unsure with what I wanted to do with my degree. Interior design has always been a passion of mine so I decided to go back to school and pursue my passion. Going back to school was one of the best decisions I have made, and has even given me the opportunity to intern at Sapphire Pear with the fantastic designers Barrie Spang and Ashleigh Clark!
What was your favorite project in school? One of my favorite projects was when we had to design a kitchen floor plan. We were given the overall dimensions of the kitchen then we were free to decide our cabinetry layout and nomenclature, appliances and which walls to do interior elevations. With an inspiration image I chose each appliance, furniture, fixtures and appliances then put it all together for a board presentation.
I also really enjoyed some of my design fundamentals projects where we had to apply one of the principles/elements of design to a composition.
What do you love about Interior Design? Living in a space that makes me feel safe, comfortable, happy and look beautiful is very important to me, and that is why I love interior design. I love creating a space that brings people together, makes you feel welcome and inspired while being functional. And I love that I can use my passion to help others make their home or space the best it can be.
What is your favorite thing about your IIDA Student Membership? While I am a new member of IIDA I am very excited to have the opportunity to grow my network and to meet and learn from so many other professionals. I am looking forward to taking full advantage of my IIDA membership!
