Silke Becker is the Senior Interior Designer and a Shareholder at Ross-Tarrant Architects in Lexington, Kentucky. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Silke’s 20-year design career was inspired by her mother who always encouraged her creativity and exploration of art. In school she aspired to be a sculptor, a passion that ultimately led her to discover Architecture and the world of Interior Design.
Her firm is exclusively dedicated to designing educational environments, and one of Silke’s favorite projects is the Downing Student Union at Western Kentucky University. She loves seeing how positively students react when they are supported by spaces created specifically for them. Silke derives the tremendous satisfaction from creating modern educational environments designed to enhance student performance and the living/learning experience.
Silke’s advice for young designers is to embrace technology and develop a firm understanding of Building Information Modeling (BIM). She encourages all designers –young and old – to be lifelong learners, leaning on sources like IIDA to stay abreast of trends affecting the modern design professional.
Silke enjoys hiking and reading, but her favorite hobby is sailing, which he has done with her family since she was a child. An avid lover of Mid-Century Modern furniture and jewelry, Silke says the 50’s and 60’s are her favorite eras in design history.
When asked who would be on her fantasy guest list for a dinner party in her home, Silke’s reply was, “my family, Massimo Vignelli, Calvin Klein, the Obamas, Oprah…Oh, and Pink to keep things interesting!”
