Hello and welcome to ‘From The Desk of…’ a new IIDA Ohio Kentucky Chapter series on design trends, what’s hot... and sometimes... what’s not. This month’s post is brought to you by our former past president, Molly Bryant. Keep reading below for her top ten picks on what is trending this summer/fall of 2015.
The Virgin hotel in Chicago is so cool! Richard Branson you really outdid yourself this time. The guest rooms are not the largest, but the experience is on par. Every little detail was thought of, including the earplugs on my pillow in a beautiful package reading “go the L to sleep.”
I didn’t even notice the L-train running right outside of my window because the earplugs were packaged so well.
Even if you are not staying overnight, check out the rooftop bar for a cocktail and an amazing city view.
If you find yourself in Columbus Ohio, do yourself a favor and check out Wolf’s Ridge Brewing.
I strategically did not post a photo of their brunch because it is amazing and I don’t know if I’m ready to share it with others. If you do go for the brunch and you love eggs Benedict you must try their version. Also, they have an amazing refreshment called a beermosa!
#3. 3PM SNACK ATTACK
If you can’t decide between sweet and salty and you need an afternoon snack try some Boom Chicka Pop. My personal fave is the sweet and spicy…
#4. TO QUENCH YOUR THIRST….AND YOUR SWEET TOOTH
After you have had your brunch and your snack, now it’s time to wash it all down with this magical beverage… Not your Father’s Root Beer by Small Town Brewery. I do not condone consuming this at your desk during work hours, it’s more of a lazy weekend treat. If you really want to get those creative juices flowing, try making it into a float like this image below.
#5. ANIMAL INSTINCTS
Now that your belly is full and your whistle has been watered, it is time to add some flare to your space. When nature is calling and you must accessorize with wall mounted animals but you do not want to harm fluffy, have no fear, White Faux Taxidermy is here.
Why you ask? Well, why not?
#6. GIFTS NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS
If faux taxidermy is not the right gift for that special someone in your life, turn to The Grommet. This website is great for gifts. You can not only find unique innovative items here, but at the same time you also support the up and coming inventors behind the designs. They launch something new and interesting almost daily.
#7. FOR ALL THINGS COOL
For a blog that provides news on trends, travel, art, gadgets, design, and many other sources of inspiration, subscribe to The Cool Hunter.
The tag line sums it up, ‘Roaming the USA and the globe so you’re in the know’.
#8. THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT
After you have read your latest cool hunter mail and you take off to roam the globe yourself, how do you not stand out so obvious like a tourist? Easy, you download the city mapper app. This app is available for most of the largest cities on a national and international level. With one swipe here and another swipe there you can have access to all of the public transportation options, the routes, places to stay, eat, drink, shop, and much more. The interface is so smooth, just like butter.
#9. PLAY IT BY EAR
When you need to regain your focus, or listen to some sweet tunes, try your ear at the Vitamin String Quartet, also known as VSQ.
In my personal opinion, when you need to put your head down and focus this is the perfect background music. White it is the beautiful sounds of a string quartet, don’t be fooled, you will recognize most of the music they play. You will be surprised to hear a range from classic rock, pop, hip hop, and I’m sure I’m forgetting other genres.
#10. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
That’s right folks, never stop learning. Whether it is to stay up to date with software, learn a new program or dabble in a new hobby, make your self-visit Skill share.
Skillshare is an online learning community for creators. You can teach courses or sign up to take the courses. The courses consist of a series of videos that you can go through at your own pace. Class ‘subjects’ vary from all areas of design, to productivity and business related topics.
That’s all for now, enjoy!
