Member Spotlight: Melissa Carlson
    • Name:
      Melissa Carlson (Formerly Parkinson)
    • Position/Company:
Senior Designer/TDA Interiors & TDA Architects
    • IIDA Member Since:
My IIDA journey began as a Student Member in 2006; upon graduation I became an Associate Member and then in 2014 when I passed the NCIDQ (Alleluia!) I became a Professional Member!
    • What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on several Corporate projects and recently completed several Hospitality projects. We provide full service interior design and architecture services and consider ourselves a boutique firm. This allows us to morph our scope of services to align with our clients needs. I currently work on all phases of a project, including but not limited too, Programming, Space Planning, Construction Documents, Specifications of FF&E and Construction Administration.
    • Why design? What gets you excited about design?
I love the problem solving component of it. A broker or prospective tenant will contact us with their program and square foot requirement (or we work with them to create their program). It then is a puzzle to figure out how to, creatively, efficiently and most importantly code compliant, fit them within their square foot requirements. I find it extremely rewarding when I can achieve the above and (hopefully!)meet all their program requirements.
    • On a typical Saturday, where can we find you?
On Saturday, you can find me spending time with my Husband in our current town of Georgetown. We like to spend as much time outdoors as we can and visit family and friends often. We are blessed to have family and friends in Cincinnati, Cleveland and many other states.
    • Why are you a member of IIDA
I am member of IIDA because I believe it is extremely important to be an advocate for my profession. I want others to understand what we do and why we do it. Interior Design for the most part is misunderstood and under valued. I am a member of IIDA because I want to be a part of that movement that changes Interior Design to be completely understood and incredibly valued.
On a much lighter note, whom doesn't love appellations behind their name :)
    • What is your spirit animal?
I have never been asked this question before and for no other reason then a throwback to my college I am lightheartedly going to say Black Squirrel! This will probably only make sense to those in IIDA ClevAk (Hi Everyone!)
    • What's your favorite website?
    • Trust me designers, its more addicting than Pinterest
