Ann Swope is the President and Owner of Swope Design in Louisville, Kentucky. She has served at the helm of her own design practice since 1989, and has been in the Design industry for 34 years. She has a B.S in Interior Design from the University of Cincinnati’s Program for Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.
The opportunity to create better environments for people to live and work in is what motivates Ann to do what she does. Another motivator for Ann is the opportunity to work with talented colleagues and mentor upcoming design professionals. Her all-time favorite project was the Renovation of the Cerebral Palsy Kids Center. This space was transformed from a gray, uninspired space to a vibrant, colorful environment, accented by dynamic graphics that told an uplifting story. Seeing the reaction of the kids and caregivers upon entering the space will always be one of her most rewarding design experiences
Ann advises young designers just entering the industry to find your passion, find something that you want to be the best at, and go for it. Make this your area of excellence, distinguish yourself and never stop learning!
Ann feels that IIDA is a resource among her peers for questions and answers. It also is a research source for Designers and helps with direction within the profession.
When asked what era in time Ann would have liked to have lived in other than present day, Ann replied the 1920’s and 1930’s. She has a love of the Jazz era, the clothing and textiles are what attract her to that era.
Some of us may not know this about Ann, but the summer after college, Ann and a classmate friend hopped into a VW Rabbit and set off on a 10,00 mile, six week adventure, camping at various locales across and around the United States.
